The HMMS Vipers (03) concluded their 2016-2017 season by winning the top flight of the PA Classics Mid Atlantic Cup.
In their first game, the Vipers played Calverton Cerritos Academy (MD). After going down 1-0 early, the boys bounced back to score 3 unanswered goals, winning 3-1. In their second game of pool play, the Vipers faced off against Bethesda South (VA) and fought to a 3-0 victory. In their last pool play game, the Vipers played Harleysville Ready. Harleysville came out strong and found the back of the net 3 minutes into the game. After regrouping, the boys took control of the rest of the game and cruised to an 8-1 victory. The Vipers finished atop its pool scoring 14 goals and conceding only 2.
The boys would face a familiar foe in the finals, playing the Laurel Lions for the third time this season. The Vipers had previously beaten Laurel in the prior two meetings and the Lions were hungry for payback (pun intended). The Vipers got on the board first, converting a penalty kick 5 minutes into the game. Laurel continued to battle and equalized late in the first half. At half the score was tied 1-1. The Vipers took a 2-1 lead after a header off a free kick found the back of the net. The lead would not hold as Laurel tied the game soon thereafter. At the end of regulation the score was tied 2-2. For the second time in a week, the Vipers championship aspirations would be determined by penalty kicks. Rock paved the way by saving Laurel's first penalty attempt while their second sailed over the cross bar. The Vipers, remained calm and buried each of their attempts, taking home the MAC Championship to conclude their 2016-2017 season.
The Vipers finished the year with a record of 33 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie.
