Frequently Asked Questions
- What does HMMS stand for?
HMMS stands for Hampden-Monroe-Middlex-Silver Spring, which are the four townships that make up the soccer club.
- Are you non-profit or for-profit?
We are a non-profit volunteer-run organization. We do have two paid employees who manage the day-to-day to operations of the club, and some coaches or trainers for the elite travel teams are paid, but the lion's share of the work done in the club is done by volunteers, most of them families with kids who play.
- How many kids play for HMMS?
Year-to-year we average about 1800 kids playing in rec and travel combined. Some years more, some years less, but that's the average.
- How many fields does HMMS manage?
Typically about 40. We use fields provided by neighborhoods, churches, schools, and the townships. We line them, we maintain the nets, sometimes we even mow them.
- Do you offer travel, rec, or both?
We offer both rec and travel teams, and typically we offer multiple travel teams at each age-group for boys and for girls. This means that there's almost certainly a team that matches your child's ability.
- Is my child old enough to play?
HMMS follows the same birth date cut-off deadline as the CVSD follows for kindergarten registration. Your child must turn 5 by September 1 at the start of the season.
- When does the season begin?
The season begins in the fall of one year and continues the spring of the following year. Children remain on the same team for fall and spring play.
- On what team will my son/daughter be placed?
The Age Group Coordinators use information from the player registration forms to help in dividing up teams. The township, school, and housing development information help to aid in the forming of the teams. The Age Group Coordinators do their best to keep children from the same areas together and as close to home as possible.
- When will we know who our child’s coach will be?
AROUND August 1st you should receive a call from your child’s coach with the field, days, and times that your child will practice.
- When are practices and games?
Practices for the fall season begin in mid-August and are held twice a week. Games begin the weekend after Labor Day and continue through the end of October. Games are played on weekends. Practices for the spring begin the end of March (depending on the weather) and games begin around April 1st and finish up the weekend prior to Memorial Day Weekend. Spring teams typically practice once a week, though some teams will practice twice a week at the discretion of the coach. The U-06 age group only plays two evenings during the week in both fall and spring; one evening is a practice and one evening is a game.
- Where will my child practice?
HMMS utilizes township, school district, church, and development fields throughout Hampden, Middlesex, Monroe, and Silver Spring Township. The age group coordinators do their best to TRY to keep children playing as close to home as possible. This task can be difficult if we receive more children from an area than we receive parent coach volunteers.
- What does the registration fee include?
Your registration fee covers the cost of a uniform (shorts, jersey, and socks), player, team, and insurance fees paid to the Eastern PA Youth Soccer Association, referee fees, and field up-keep. The registration fee includes fall and spring play.
- Other than the uniform provided by HMMS, is there any other equipment my child will need?
Shin guards are an absolute must! Soccer cleats are optional but most children choose to wear soccer cleats instead of sneakers. The soccer equipment is available at sporting goods stores such as Angelo’s Soccer Corner, Dick’s, Wal-Mart, K-Mart.
- What if my child tries out for but does not make the TRAVEL TEAM?
Registrants that try out for TRAVEL but are not chosen for a TRAVEL TEAM are automatically placed on a Recreational Team.
- Is the HMMS program co-ed?
The U-06 age group is co-ed. The U-07 and older age groups play same gender but two age groups play together, U-07 & U-08 play together, U-09 & U-10 play together, etc.
- Wait, is this website new?
Yes, this website is new. We've completely redesigned it using software from Blue Sombrero.
- Why'd you change it?
There were some new features we wanted to provide to you, including online registration, sending newsletters, sending texts in case of field closures, etc. It gives us the ability to be more responsive to what you and your family needs.
- There was this thing I could find on the old website, but now I can't find it. Where is it?
Unfortunately that happens sometimes. We've done our best to migrate everything over, but some things were probably missed. If there's something you need, and you can't find it, you can contact the webmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org and they will do their best to find it, post it, and let you know when it's available.
